Hot, Hot, Hot Summer Movies (2018)

The Philippine Summer is heating up. And so are the movies!

This March and April, save your entertainment budget for these movies lined up for some hot viewing.

Tomb Raider (March 7)

This is not a sequel. This is about Lara Croft’s first expedition where she embarks on a dangerous journey to her father’s last-known destination to solve the mystery of his disappearance. The destination is a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith, stubborn spirit and physical skills to conquer the unknown. Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft, while Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas play supporting roles.

A Wrinkle in Time (March 14)

An upcoming science fantasy adventure based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine. It’s about a young girl, Meg Murry Storm Reid), who sets off on a quest to find her astrophysicist father, Alex (Chris Pine) who disappeared after discovering a new planet. He is being held captive on a distant planet deep in the grip of a universe-spanning evil. Meg works with her highly intelligent younger brother, her new friend and fellow student Calvin O’Keeffe, and three astral travelers, to find Alex.

Pambansang Third Wheel (March 14)

Yassi Pressman is the loveless and perennial third wheel who accompanies her couple friends when they go out on dates. Will she ever find her pair? She meets Neo (Sam Milby) and when she finally thinks she’s found The One, she finds out he has a son and his ex-wife (Sam Pinto) is a formidable challenge.

Mary Magdalene (March 21)

In time for Holy Week this biblical drama is about The Mary Magdalene. It stars Rooney Mara as Mary and Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus. Besides being true to the biblical plot, it tries to rescue Mary Magdalene from the scourge of anti-feminist feelings and misinterpretation, and shows how important she really is.

Ready Player One (March 31)

When the creator of a virtual reality world called OASIS dies, he releases a video where he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg which will give the finder his fortune. This science-fiction movie follows protagonist Wade Watts who finds the first clue and goes on a wild search for the Easter Egg that could make him inherit the fortune in a world wrecked by an energy crisis.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (March 31)

Ten years after the Battle of the Breach, the oceans are again restless. But the Jaeger program has evolved into the next generation for the PPDC. However, something has reopened the Breach for the Kaiju and a Jaeger has gone rogue. Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, rises up to stand against the evolved Kaiju and the rogue Jaeger to prevent humanity’s extinction and preserve his father’s legacy.

Never Not Love You (March 31)

James Reid and Jadine Lustre star as two childhood friends who fall in love and must deal with the problem of long distance relationships. This is Jadine’s most grown up film together with many steamy scenes and a darker plot.

A Quiet Place (April 11)

This American supernatural horror film stars John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Mysterious supernatural forces attracted to sound have surfaced and are attacking all over the world. A family must now hide and live in silence at a secluded abandoned farm to survive, by avoiding every noise and communicating in sign language.

Loving Pablo (April 11)
This Spanish drama film directed by Fernando León de Aranoa is based on Virginia Vallejo´s bestselling memoir Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar. It’s about a journalist (Penelope Cruz) who strikes up a romantic relationship with notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar (Javier Bardem).

Almost A Love Story (April 11)

Young actors Barbie Forteza and Derrick Monasterio reunite in a movie about young love in romantic Italy. Almost faithful to their real onscreen relationship as pals and good friends, but not quite “them”, this movie explores the intricacies of young love and the wonderful splendor of Tricase.

Submergence (April 18)

Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy star in a romantic thriller whose main action takes place in a room with no windows on the eastern coast of Africa. James More (McAvoy), a Scotsman, is held captive by jihadist fighters. Thousands of miles away in the Greenland Sea, Danielle Flinders (Vikander) prepares to dive in a submersible to the ocean floor. In their confines they are drawn back to the Christmas of the previous year, where a chance encounter on a beach in France led to an intense and enduring romance.

Avengers Infinity War (April 27)

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.
