Dad’s A Superhero!

If Anna Jarvis is responsible for Mother’s Day, Sonora Smart Dodd is responsible for Father’s Day.
Sonora was so inspired by her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran  who singlehandedly raised six of his children after his wife died in childbirth. After hearing a sermon about what Anna Jarvis did for her Mom with Mother’s Day, she was inspired to do the same for fathers everywhere.
She shared the idea with her pastors and suggested that Father’s Day be celebrated every June 5, her father’s birthday. But the pastors did not have enough time to prepare a sermon, so the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. And that’s how it has been since June 17, 1910.
Father’s Day is celebrated in June because Sonora Dodd’s father was born in June.
Father’s Day became very popular during World War II when lots of fathers came home from serving in the war. But Father’s Day became an official national holiday in 1972 – 58 years after Mother’s Day became a holiday.
Now Father’s Day is just as well celebrated as Mother’s Day because Dads deserve it! Make the third week of June a very special day for Dad by taking him out, giving him a thoughtful gift and letting him know how much he means to you.
According to research, Dads like : gadgets, tools, sports gear, music, games, phones and things for their cars.
Find out what Dad likes. Chances are, he’ll find them at Theater Mall, Shoppesville Plus and the Promenade. All Dads who hear Sunday Mass at the Promenade on June 15 get a special gift after the Mass plus a chance to win prizes in a Father’s Day raffle. Exciting gift checks from stores and dining places may just give Dad what he wants!
